Namibia Beat South Africa by 18 Runs to Kickstart Home T20I Tri-Series

Namibia produced a memorable performance on home soil, defeating South Africa by 18 runs in the opening match of the landmark T20I tri-series in Windhoek.

Namibia made an impressive start to their home T20I tri-series against South Africa and Zimbabwe, securing an 18-run victory over the Proteas at the Namibia Cricket Ground in Windhoek.

The result is another significant moment for Namibian cricket, particularly with the country set to co-host the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2027 alongside South Africa and Zimbabwe.

Namibia Post 163 After Strong Start

After being asked to bat first, Namibia finished their 20 overs on 163/9.

Openers Jan Frylinck and Louren Steenkamp gave the hosts an excellent platform, putting together an 84 run opening partnership. Frylinck was the standout batter, scoring 60 runs from 38 balls.

The strong powerplay helped Namibia establish momentum before South Africa’s bowlers fought back during the middle and death overs.

Despite losing wickets regularly, Namibia managed to reach a competitive total of 163.

South Africa’s Chase Falls Short

South Africa’s chase got off to a difficult start as both openers, Jordan Hermann and Lhuan-dre Pretorius, were dismissed inside the powerplay.

However, Dewald Brevis gave the visitors hope with an outstanding counter-attacking innings.

Brevis scored 75 from 50 balls, including five sixes and four fours, keeping South Africa in contention deep into the chase.

But Namibia’s bowlers held their nerve in the closing overs and prevented South Africa from producing the required late surge.

The Proteas eventually finished on 145/9, falling 18 runs short of Namibia’s total.

JJ Smit and Ruben Trumpelmann Lead Namibia’s Bowling Attack

Namibia’s bowlers delivered under pressure when it mattered most.

JJ Smit claimed three wickets while conceding just 31 runs, while Ruben Trumpelmann also took three wickets for 24 runs. Their efforts were crucial in stopping South Africa’s lower order from completing the chase.

The disciplined bowling performance ensured Namibia completed one of their most memorable home victories against a major cricketing nation.

Namibia Continue Their Strong T20I Form

The victory adds to Namibia’s impressive recent run in T20I cricket. According to the ICC, Namibia had won five of their previous seven T20Is since the 2026 Men’s T20 World Cup.

The win over South Africa also carries extra significance because it came on home soil rather than at a major global tournament.

Namibia captain Gerhard Erasmus said the victory showed that the team can compete consistently at this level and that previous big wins were not simply one-off results.

Namibia Beat South Africa Again in T20Is

The victory also extended Namibia’s perfect T20I record against South Africa.

The two teams have now met only twice in T20I cricket, with Namibia winning both encounters.

That makes the result even more remarkable given South Africa’s greater depth and experience in international cricket.

South Africa Face Zimbabwe Next

South Africa will have an immediate opportunity to recover when they face Zimbabwe in the second match of the tri-series on 29 August in Windhoek.

Namibia will return to action against Zimbabwe on 31 August, before facing South Africa again on 4 September.

The top two teams after the league stage will meet in the final on 6 September. All matches are being played at the Namibia Cricket Ground in Windhoek.
