ICC Cricket World Cup 2003 Interesting Facts

Historic African Debut: The 2003 edition became the first Cricket World Cup to be hosted in Africa, with matches staged across South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Kenya.
Kenya’s Fairy-Tale Campaign: Kenya made history by becoming the first non-Test-playing nation to reach the World Cup semi-finals, benefiting from New Zealand’s forfeited fixture before defeating Zimbabwe to secure their place.
Sachin Tendulkar’s Record-Breaking Tournament: Sachin Tendulkar dominated the competition with 673 runs in 11 matches, a World Cup record at the time, earning him the Player of the Tournament award.
Australia’s Perfect Title Run: Led by Ricky Ponting, Australia won all 11 of their matches to complete an unbeaten campaign and capture their third Cricket World Cup title.
Black Armband Protest: Zimbabwe cricketers Andy Flower and Henry Olonga wore black armbands during their opening match as a symbolic protest to mourn what they described as the “death of democracy” in Zimbabwe.
Shane Warne’s Shock Withdrawal: Australia suffered a major setback before the tournament began when star leg-spinner Shane Warne was sent home after failing a pre-tournament drug test.
Controversial Forfeited Fixture: England refused to travel to Harare for their group-stage match against Zimbabwe due to security concerns, forfeiting the game and losing valuable points in the process.
Chaminda Vaas’s Historic Hat-Trick: Sri Lankan fast bowler Chaminda Vaas claimed a remarkable hat-trick with the first three deliveries against Bangladesh, including a wicket with the very first ball of the match—one of the most memorable bowling feats in World Cup history.

ICC Cricket World Cup 2003 Player of the Tournament

The Player of the Tournament (Man of the Series) for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2003 was Indian master blaster Sachin Tendulkar.

Tournament Innovations and Quirks

Duckworth-Lewis Miscalculation: South Africa famously misread the rain rules against Sri Lanka, tying the match when they needed one more run to win, resulting in a shocking group-stage exit.
Political Boycotts: The ICC Cricket World Cup 2003 was overshadowed by political and security concerns. England forfeited their group-stage match against Zimbabwe by refusing to travel to Harare, while New Zealand declined to play Kenya in Nairobi over security fears. Both decisions resulted in forfeited matches and the loss of crucial group-stage points.

Bizarre and Memorable Matches

The Walk: In ICC Cricket World Cup 2003, Adam Gilchrist nicked a ball from Chaminda Vaas on 0 during the semi-final in Port Elizabeth.
