Richard Hughes Leaves Liverpool: Reds Begin Search for New Sporting Director

Liverpool are facing another major change behind the scenes after Richard Hughes leaves Liverpool following just over two years as the club’s sporting director. The decision comes shortly after the summer transfer window closed, with Hughes now expected to take up a new role at Saudi Pro League club Al-Hilal.

Liverpool confirmed Hughes’ departure on Saturday, September 5, ending a period in which he played an important role in the club’s recruitment and managerial planning. Fenway Sports Group president Mike Gordon will now lead the search for a new sporting director.

Why Richard Hughes Leaves Liverpool

Richard Hughes had already indicated earlier in 2026 that he wanted to leave Liverpool. His expected move to Al-Hilal had been widely reported for several months, but he remained in his position throughout the summer transfer window so Liverpool could complete their recruitment plans.

Hughes is now expected to join Al-Hilal in Saudi Arabia, where he will reunite with former colleagues including Simon Francis. Liverpool had no formal approach from Al-Hilal during the summer window, and Hughes continued to work solely for the Reds while he remained at the club.

Richard Hughes’ Liverpool Record

Hughes joined Liverpool from Bournemouth in 2024 after being recruited by Michael Edwards. His arrival was part of a wider restructuring of Liverpool’s football operations following Jürgen Klopp’s departure.

During his time at Anfield, Hughes was involved in the appointment of Arne Slot and later the arrival of Andoni Iraola. His period at the club also included one of Liverpool’s biggest transfer spending periods.

Reports estimate that Liverpool spent around £670 million during Hughes’ time as sporting director. The spending included major deals for Alexander Isak, Florian Wirtz, Hugo Ekitike and Bradley Barcola.

Hughes Oversaw Liverpool’s Record Spending

The biggest part of Hughes’ tenure was Liverpool’s huge investment in the squad.

The Reds spent around £450 million in the previous summer window, before adding roughly another £250 million in the most recent transfer window. The recruitment drive brought several high-profile players to Anfield as Liverpool attempted to reshape the squad.

Alexander Isak became one of the headline arrivals after Liverpool agreed a British-record deal worth around £125 million. Florian Wirtz and Hugo Ekitike were also brought in as Liverpool dramatically changed their attacking options.

More recently, Bradley Barcola arrived from Paris Saint-Germain in a deal worth approximately £123 million. He made his Liverpool debut in the clubs 2-0 victory over Ipswich Town.

Liverpool Now Need Another Sporting Director

With Richard Hughes leaves Liverpool now confirmed, the club must begin the process of finding his successor.

Mike Gordon, FSG’s president, is expected to oversee the search. Liverpool have already experienced significant turnover in the sporting director position in recent years, with Julian Ward, Jörg Schmadtke and Hughes all occupying the role since Michael Edwards stepped away from the position in 2022.

The next appointment will therefore be important because Liverpool need stability rather than another short term change in their football structure.

Liverpool’s Football Structure Remains in Place

Despite Hughes’ departure, Liverpool are not starting from scratch.

Several important figures remain at the club, including technical director Julian Ward, director of football development Pedro Marques, assistant sporting director David Woodfine and chief scout Barry Hunter.

That existing structure should help Liverpool maintain continuity while FSG searches for a permanent replacement for Hughes.

Hughes Leaves After a Difficult Period of Change

The timing of Hughes’ departure is particularly interesting because Liverpool have already gone through major changes in the last few months.

Michael Edwards left his football leadership position at FSG in July after the club’s plans for a multi-club model failed to progress as hoped. Hughes’ own departure now adds another important change at executive level.

At the same time, Liverpool have changed their head coach. Arne Slot, who delivered the Premier League title during his first season, was replaced by Andoni Iraola after a difficult spell.

Iraola has now recorded his first Liverpool victory, with Alexander Isak scoring twice in a 2-0 win against Ipswich.

What Richard Hughes Leaves Behind

Hughes leaves Liverpool with a mixed but significant legacy.

He was responsible for major recruitment decisions and was involved in a period of enormous spending. Some of those transfers will take time to judge properly, particularly because several of the club’s biggest signings are still adapting to life at Anfield.

His work also helped Liverpool move through the post-Klopp era, including the transition from Slot to Iraola.

However, the scale of the spending has also increased expectations. Liverpool supporters will now expect the club’s next sporting director to ensure that the money invested in the squad produces long-term success.

Could Hughes’ Departure Affect Liverpool’s Future Transfers?

For now, there is no indication that Liverpool’s transfer strategy will suddenly change.

The club has a wider recruitment structure in place, meaning the departure of one executive should not stop its football operations. However, the identity of the next sporting director could eventually influence Liverpool’s transfer priorities, scouting methods and approach to squad building.

The immediate priority will be maintaining stability while the search for Hughes’ replacement takes place.

Richard Hughes’ Next Chapter at Al-Hilal

Hughes is expected to continue his executive career with Al-Hilal in the Saudi Pro League.

His move represents another major addition to the Saudi football project and gives Al-Hilal an experienced football executive who has worked at Premier League level.

Hughes’ previous relationship with Simon Francis, who is already working at Al-Hilal, is also an important factor behind the move.

What Happens Next for Liverpool?

The biggest question now is who will replace Hughes.

Liverpool have invested heavily in their squad, changed their head coach and experienced significant changes within FSG’s football leadership. The next sporting director will therefore inherit a squad with enormous potential but also significant expectations.

For Liverpool, finding the right person could be just as important as their next major signing.

The confirmation that Richard Hughes leaves Liverpool closes one chapter at Anfield, but it also opens another. With the new season already underway, FSG will now have to find a sporting director capable of guiding Liverpool’s recruitment strategy through the next stage of the club’s rebuild.
