Isak Finally Arrives as Gakpo demonstrates his importance for Liverpool
Isak finally arrives as Gakpo proves value to Liverpool was the story of Liverpool’s first Premier League victory under Andoni Iraola as Alexander Isak finally produced the kind of performance the club had been waiting for.
Liverpool defeated Ipswich Town 2-0 at Portman Road on Friday night, with Isak scoring both goals inside the opening nine minutes. Cody Gakpo was equally important, creating both goals and showing exactly why Liverpool were reluctant to let him leave during the summer transfer window.
For Isak, the performance was particularly significant after a difficult first season at Anfield. The £125 million striker had struggled with fitness and form, but his quickfire double suggested that Liverpool may finally be seeing the player they expected when they broke the British transfer record to sign him.
Isak Finally Finds His Liverpool Rhythm
Isak’s start against Ipswich could hardly have been better.
The Sweden international opened the scoring in the sixth minute after receiving a clever pass from Gakpo between LeifDavis and Jacob Greaves. He created enough power on his right-footed effort to beat goalkeeper Kjell Scherpen, although the Ipswich keeper will feel he should have done better.
Just three minutes later, Isak doubled Liverpool’s advantage.
This time, Gakpo produced a superb outside-of-the-foot pass from inside his own half. Isak showed excellent movement, using a left-foot touch to move inside Greaves before rounding Scherpen and finishing calmly with his left foot.
The two goals arrived so quickly that the contest was effectively decided before Ipswich had settled.
Most importantly, Isak looked sharper, fitter and more confident. His movement behind the defensive line and willingness to press were much closer to the qualities that made him one of Europe’s most sought-after strikers at Newcastle United.
Gakpo Shows Why Liverpool Kept Him
While Isak received most of the attention, Cody Gakpo was arguably the other major winner from the night.
The Netherlands forward provided assists for both goals and produced an outstanding all-round performance. His passing, movement and ability to find space gave Liverpool another dimension in attack.
Gakpo’s future had become one of the interesting stories of the final days of the transfer window. He had been linked with a move to Manchester City, but Liverpool ultimately kept him after other potential attacking deals failed to materialise.
That decision already looks much more valuable after his performance at Portman Road.
Gakpo was not simply providing service for Isak. He was involved in Liverpool’s attacking build-up, created opportunities and repeatedly gave Ipswich’s defence problems.
Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk had previously stressed Gakpo’s importance to the team, and the forward’s display provided an immediate example of why the club wanted him to stay.
Isak’s Difficult First Season at Liverpool
The contrast between Isak’s first Liverpool campaign and his latest performance is striking.
After arriving from Newcastle, Isak struggled for consistency and fitness. He played 22 matches across competitions for 1,033 minutes and scored only four goals.
His Premier League numbers were even less impressive, with three goals in 14 appearances and 703 minutes.
Those figures created questions over whether Liverpool had paid too much for a player who had previously looked unstoppable at Newcastle.
There were also concerns about his physical condition when he arrived, while injuries made it difficult for him to establish a regular rhythm.
The early signs this season are much more encouraging.
Isak has already matched his previous Premier League goal tally, and he has now shown that he can operate effectively within Iraola’s attacking system.
Iraola Gets the Response He Wanted
The victory was also important for Andoni Iraola.
The Liverpool manager had endured a difficult beginning to his tenure, but the win over Ipswich gave him his first victory as Reds boss.
Iraola has made it clear that his expectations of Isak go beyond simply scoring goals. He wants the striker to contribute when Liverpool do not have possession and help the team through pressing and defensive work.
That approach appeared to suit Isak against Ipswich.
Liverpool attacked aggressively from the opening whistle and repeatedly looked to get behind the home defence. Isak’s pace and movement made that approach particularly effective.
After the match, Isak acknowledged that Liverpool’s normal pre-season preparation had helped them begin to understand how Iraola wants them to play.
The manager also praised his striker’s physical condition and confidence, while making clear that there is still more he wants from him outside the penalty area.
Bradley Barcola Makes Liverpool Debut
Another major talking point from the match was the debut of Bradley Barcola.
Liverpool signed the France international from Paris Saint-Germain for a reported £123 million, making him one of the most expensive additions of the summer.
Barcola came on for the final 26 minutes and immediately showed glimpses of the pace that made him such a highly rated attacker.
Although he did not score or assist, his introduction gave Liverpool another direct attacking option and added even more speed to an already dangerous forward line.
For Iraola, having Isak, Gakpo and Barcola available provides plenty of flexibility in the final third.
Liverpool’s Transfer Drama Gives Gakpo a Bigger Role
Gakpo’s performance also needs to be viewed against the backdrop of Liverpool’s dramatic transfer window.
The club explored several attacking options before the deadline but failed to complete deals for players including Ismaila Sarr and Yankuba Minteh.
There was also late interest in other positions, with Liverpool making moves that ultimately did not result in completed transfers.
That left Gakpo’s continued presence at Anfield looking even more important.
The forward was reportedly open to the possibility of joining Manchester City, but Liverpool’s inability to complete alternative attacking deals helped keep him at the club.
His performance against Ipswich now makes that outcome look particularly significant.
Isak and Gakpo Could Become Liverpool’s Key Partnership
The most encouraging aspect for Liverpool was the chemistry between Isak and Gakpo.
Isak needs service that allows him to attack space rather than constantly receiving the ball with his back to goal. Gakpo’s ability to play passes into dangerous areas can provide exactly that.
The first goal showed their understanding, while the second demonstrated the quality Liverpool can produce when Gakpo has time to pick out Isak’s run.
If that relationship continues to develop, Liverpool could have one of the most dangerous attacking combinations in the Premier League.
It also gives Iraola different tactical options. Gakpo can operate from the wing or move centrally, while Isak can stretch defensive lines with his pace.
The Pressure on Isak Has Not Completely Disappeared
Despite the impressive performance, Isak still has work to do.
Two goals against a newly promoted Ipswich side are an excellent beginning, but Liverpool paid a huge fee for him because they expect consistent performances against the strongest teams in England and Europe.
The biggest challenge will be maintaining this level.
Iraola has already suggested that his demands will not focus exclusively on goals. Isak must continue pressing, making runs and contributing to Liverpool’s overall structure.
The striker himself admitted that his previous season was difficult, but he now believes the problems are behind him.
That confidence could be crucial.
What the Ipswich Win Means for Liverpool
The 2-0 victory does more than add three points to Liverpool’s Premier League campaign.
It gives Iraola his first win and provides evidence that his attacking ideas are beginning to work.
It also changes the conversation around Isak.
Only weeks ago, questions were being asked about whether Liverpool’s record investment had been justified. After his two-goal display, the discussion has shifted towards what he could achieve if he stays fit.
Gakpo’s performance is equally encouraging. Instead of being a player whose future was uncertain, he suddenly looks like an important part of Liverpool’s plans.
The arrival of Barcola makes the attacking competition even stronger.
Liverpool’s Next Challenge
Liverpool cannot afford to treat the Ipswich victory as the end of their problems.
The Premier League will offer much tougher defensive challenges, and Isak will need to reproduce his movement and finishing against higher-quality opposition.
Gakpo will also be expected to maintain his creative influence rather than producing an isolated standout performance.
For Iraola, the next task is to turn one convincing win into consistency.
If Isak remains fit, Gakpo continues creating chances and Barcola adapts quickly to English football, Liverpool could become a very different team from the one that struggled during the previous campaign.
