Red Star Fans Unveil Ratko Mladic Tifo Before Belgrade Derby
Red Star Belgrade fans displayed a large tifo featuring convicted war criminal Ratko Mladic before Sunday’s heated derby against Partizan Belgrade.
The controversial display came just days after UEFA fined Red Star €90,000 over fan chants and banners honouring Mladic during their Europa League play-off against Viktoria Plzen.
Mladic, the former Bosnian Serb military commander, was convicted of genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity. He died in a UN prison in The Hague at the age of 84 while serving a life sentence.
The tribute at the 180th Belgrade derby also included a minute of silence, while supporters from both sides chanted Mladic’s name. Red Star eventually won the match 2-1.
The display has sparked strong criticism, particularly in Bosnia and Herzegovina, because of Mladic’s role in the Srebrenica genocide, in which more than 8,000 Bosniak men and boys were killed.
