Neymar Jr.: Career, World Cup, Records, Stats, Trophies & Legacy
Early Life and Childhood
Neymar Jr. was born on February 5, 1992, in Mogi das Cruzes, São Paulo, Brazil. He grew up in a football-loving family and began showing exceptional ability at a very young age.
His father, Neymar Santos Sr., played an important role in his early development and later became his adviser. Neymar’s natural flair, close control and creativity quickly made him one of Brazil’s most exciting young footballers.
Youth Career
Neymar began his youth career with Santos, one of Brazil’s most famous football clubs. His performances in the academy attracted attention because of his dribbling, speed and ability to score spectacular goals.
He progressed rapidly through the Santos system and made his senior debut while still a teenager.
Santos Senior Career
Neymar made his professional debut for Santos in 2009. He quickly became one of the biggest young stars in Brazilian football.
His breakthrough years included major domestic and continental success. Neymar helped Santos win the 2010 Copa do Brasil, 2010 Campeonato Paulista, 2011 Copa Libertadores and 2012 Recopa Sudamericana.
His performances for Santos eventually attracted interest from Europe’s biggest clubs.
Barcelona Career
In 2013, Neymar joined Barcelona, forming one of the most famous attacking partnerships in football history alongside Lionel Messi and Luis Suárez.
The trio became known as MSN and played a major role in Barcelona’s success.
Neymar won several major trophies with Barcelona, including:
- La Liga
- Copa del Rey
- Spanish Super Cup
- UEFA Champions League
- FIFA Club World Cup
The highlight came during the 2014-15 season, when Barcelona won the treble of La Liga, Copa del Rey and Champions League.
Neymar was also one of the key performers during Barcelona’s Champions League-winning campaign.
Paris Saint-Germain Career
In 2017, Neymar moved to Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) in a world-record transfer worth around €222 million.
The transfer made Neymar the most expensive footballer in history.
At PSG, he became the centrepiece of an ambitious team and won multiple domestic trophies, including Ligue 1 titles and Coupe de France trophies.
Neymar helped PSG reach the 2020 UEFA Champions League final, where the French club eventually lost to Bayern Munich.
Although injuries interrupted several seasons, Neymar remained one of PSG’s most technically gifted players.
Al Hilal and Saudi Pro League
In 2023, Neymar joined Saudi Arabian club Al Hilal.
His time in Saudi Arabia was heavily affected by injury, limiting his appearances and preventing him from producing the sustained run of football many expected.
The move nevertheless made Neymar one of the biggest names associated with the rapidly expanding Saudi Pro League.
Return to Santos
Neymar later returned to Santos, the club where his professional career began.
The return created huge excitement among Brazilian supporters and represented an emotional chapter in his career as he looked to rediscover his form and enjoy regular football again.
Brazil National Team Career
Neymar made his senior Brazil debut in 2010 and quickly became a central figure in the national team.
He represented Brazil at multiple major tournaments, including the 2014, 2018 and 2022 FIFA World Cups.
Neymar also played a major role in Brazil’s 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup triumph and helped the country win its first-ever Olympic men’s football gold medal at the 2016 Rio Olympics.
He eventually became Brazil’s all-time leading men’s goalscorer, surpassing Pelé’s previous record.
FIFA World Cup Journey
The FIFA World Cup has been one of the most important parts of Neymar’s international career, although it has also brought disappointment.
At the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, Neymar scored four goals before suffering a serious back injury in the quarter-final against Colombia, ruling him out of the remainder of the tournament.
Brazil reached the semi-finals but suffered a historic 7-1 defeat against Germany.
Neymar also played at the 2018 World Cup in Russia, where Brazil were eliminated by Belgium in the quarter-finals.
At the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, Neymar scored twice against Croatia in the quarter-final, but Brazil were eliminated on penalties after Croatia equalised late in extra time.

He has generally played as a left winger or attacking midfielder but has also operated centrally.
His ability to beat defenders and create opportunities from seemingly impossible situations has made him one of the most entertaining footballers of his generation.

Personal Life
Neymar has remained one of the most recognisable sports personalities outside football. His large social-media following, fashion interests and commercial partnerships have made him a global celebrity.
He has also frequently attracted media attention away from the pitch, particularly because of his relationships, lifestyle and high-profile career.
Neymar vs Messi and Ronaldo
Neymar played alongside Lionel Messi at Barcelona and developed a strong relationship with the Argentine superstar.
Although Neymar was sometimes included in discussions about the generation led by Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, injuries and the timing of his career prevented him from consistently competing with those two players for the biggest individual awards.
Nevertheless, his technical ability and influence on Brazil’s national team have secured his place among the most talented footballers of his generation.
Legacy
Neymar’s career is defined by extraordinary talent, unforgettable goals and major trophies, but also by injuries and some missed opportunities on football’s biggest stages.
He became one of Brazil’s most important players after the era of Pelé, Ronaldo and Ronaldinho and carried enormous expectations from Brazilian supporters.
Whether judged by his trophies, records, creativity or influence, Neymar Jr. remains one of the defining footballers of the modern era.
