Hampshire U-Turn on Kuggeleijn Signing After Fan Backlash

Hampshire have made a dramatic U-turn on the signing of New Zealand all-rounder Scott Kuggeleijn, withdrawing him from their squad after strong criticism from supporters and members of staff.

Kuggeleijn had been named in Hampshire’s squad for their County Championship clash with Warwickshire, but the club reversed its decision shortly before the match. Hampshire said it had listened to feedback from its staff and supporters.

Why Did Hampshire Reverse the Scott Kuggeleijn Signing?

The controversy centred on Kuggeleijn’s legal history.

The New Zealand cricketer faced rape and indecent-assault charges following a 2015 incident. His first trial ended without a verdict after a hung jury, while he was acquitted at a second trial in 2017. Despite the acquittal, his involvement in professional cricket has previously attracted protests and criticism.

Hampshire’s decision to include him in the squad without a prominent announcement of the signing triggered an immediate reaction from fans.

The club subsequently decided that Kuggeleijn would not represent Hampshire in any of their remaining four County Championship matches.

Scott Kuggeleijn and Hampshire’s Relegation Battle

The timing makes the decision even more significant.

Hampshire are currently at the bottom of County Championship Division One, with four matches remaining and a 16-point gap to Leicestershire above them. Kuggeleijn had been brought in to strengthen the team’s seam-bowling options during a crucial stage of the season.

His withdrawal means Hampshire must now find another solution as they fight to avoid relegation.

What Happens to Scott Kuggeleijn Now?

Kuggeleijn, 34, has represented New Zealand in Tests, ODIs and T20Is and has spent much of his domestic career with Northern Districts.

His most recent New Zealand appearance came in 2024, and he has continued playing domestic and franchise cricket since then.

The Hampshire episode is now another controversial chapter in a career that has repeatedly generated debate around his selection.

The Bigger County Cricket Debate

The Hampshire U-turn raises a wider question for county cricket: how should clubs handle players whose legal history has been publicly controversial but who were acquitted in court?

Hampshire’s decision shows how strongly supporters can influence a club’s decisions, particularly when a signing becomes controversial before the player has even taken the field.

For Hampshire, however, the immediate priority is cricket. With four Championship games left and relegation pressure increasing, the club must now focus on results.
