Sri Lanka Fight Back but India Retain Control in Colombo
Sri Lanka showed some resistance on Day 3, but India remained firmly in control of the second Test in Colombo after the hosts finished on 265/8, still 238 runs behind India’s huge first-innings total.
India had earlier posted a mammoth 503/9 declared, putting Sri Lanka under enormous pressure. The hosts were then forced to fight for survival after losing wickets regularly throughout Day 3.
Sri Lanka Struggle After Early Blow
Sri Lanka began Day 3 already facing a massive deficit, and India’s bowlers immediately continued the pressure.
Prasidh Krishna provided the first breakthrough by dismissing Kamil Mishara, increasing Sri Lanka’s problems.
However, Pasindu Sooriyabandara and Kamindu Mendis briefly changed the momentum. The pair produced an important 87-run partnership, giving Sri Lanka some hope of avoiding a complete collapse.
Krishna eventually broke the stand by removing Mendis and completed his third wicket of the innings.
India Keep Taking Wickets
India refused to allow Sri Lanka to build another major partnership.
Manav Suthar then dismissed Sri Lankan captain Dhananjaya de Silva, leaving the hosts struggling at 137/5.
Sooriyabandara continued to fight and produced an impressive 80 from 133 balls in only his second Test appearance. However, Suthar eventually trapped him lbw.
India struck again almost immediately, with Mohammed Siraj dismissing Niroshan Dickwella just three balls later.
Sri Lanka had suddenly fallen to 173/7, leaving India firmly in control.
Late Partnership Gives Sri Lanka Hope
Just when Sri Lanka appeared close to being bowled out, Sonal Dinusha and Keshara Nuwantha provided some much-needed resistance.
The pair added 57 runs from 137 balls, helping Sri Lanka move beyond the 200-run mark.
Suthar eventually ended Nuwantha’s innings, leaving Sri Lanka at 230/8.
But the hosts were not finished.
Sonal Dinusha and Lahiru Kumara added another unbeaten 35-run partnership before rain forced an early end to play.
Sri Lanka finished the day at 265/8, still 238 runs behind India.
India’s Massive First Innings
India’s dominance began with an imposing first-innings score of 503/9.
The visitors were powered by centuries from Devdutt Padikkal and Dhruv Jurel, while Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant contributed important half-centuries.
Yashasvi Jaiswal scored 45 and Ravindra Jadeja added 43, further strengthening India’s total.
For Sri Lanka, Asitha Fernando was the standout bowler with figures of 4/106.
Day 4 Could Decide the Test
Sri Lanka now face a huge challenge on Day 4.
With only two wickets remaining, their immediate objective will be to avoid being bowled out cheaply and prevent India from enforcing the follow-on.
India, meanwhile, will be looking to take the remaining wickets quickly and put Sri Lanka under even greater pressure.
If Sri Lanka cannot significantly reduce the deficit, India could have a strong opportunity to push for victory.
Key Storylines From Day 3
- Sri Lanka: 265/8
- India’s first innings: 503/9
- Sri Lanka still trail by 238 runs
- Pasindu Sooriyabandara scored 80
- Manav Suthar claimed key wickets
- Prasidh Krishna continued India’s pressure with three wickets
- Rain brought Day 3 to an early close
- Sri Lanka must avoid the follow-on on Day 4
Can Sri Lanka Save the Test?
Sri Lanka’s chances of saving the match have become increasingly difficult, but the late partnerships have given them something to work with.
If Dinusha and Kumara can continue their resistance and the lower order adds valuable runs, Sri Lanka could at least force India to bat again.
However, India remain in the stronger position.
The visitors have a 238-run lead with two Sri Lankan wickets still to fall, meaning the pressure will be firmly on the hosts when play resumes.
Final Verdict
Sri Lanka showed plenty of fighting spirit on Day 3, but India still have complete control of the Colombo Test.
The hosts managed to delay India’s progress through several useful partnerships, particularly Sooriyabandara’s 80 and the late resistance from Dinusha and Kumara.
But with Sri Lanka still 238 runs behind, India will start Day 4 as the clear favourites.
The first major question will be whether Sri Lanka can avoid the follow-on. If they fail, India could be presented with an excellent opportunity to finish the Test inside four days.
