ICC Cricket World Cup 2027 Start Date Could Move to October 2 for Gandhi Jayanti
The ICC Cricket World Cup 2027 start date could be brought forward to October 2, 2027, according to recent reports. The proposed date would coincide with Gandhi Jayanti, the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.
The tournament is set to be hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia, returning the men’s ODI World Cup to Africa after 24 years. However, the ICC has not yet issued formal confirmation that October 2 will be the official opening date.
Why October 2 Is Being Considered
The proposed ICC Cricket World Cup 2027 start date has a special connection to South Africa. Gandhi spent 21 years in South Africa, where his experiences played an important role in shaping his philosophy of non-violence.
Starting the tournament on his birthday would therefore give the opening day a symbolic connection between India, Gandhi’s legacy and one of the three World Cup host nations.
ICC Cricket World Cup 2027 Start Date: What Has Changed?
Earlier plans reportedly pointed towards an October 8 start, with warm-up matches scheduled during the first week of October.
The latest plan would move the main tournament forward to October 2, meaning the warm-up fixtures would need to be completed before the competition begins. The final is still expected to take place on November 21, 2027.
World Cup Returns to Africa
The 2027 tournament will be jointly hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia. The ICC has announced 12 venues across the three countries, with eight in South Africa, three in Zimbabwe and one in Namibia.
The tournament will feature 14 teams and 57 matches under the newly announced competition structure.
New Format Adds Another Twist
The 2027 World Cup will also introduce a different structure from the previous two editions.
The three teams ranked 12th to 14th will first compete in a Super Series, with only the winner moving into the next stage. The remaining 12 teams will then be divided into two groups of six before the competition moves into the Super Seven stage and eventually the semi-finals and final.
Is October 2 the Confirmed Start Date?
Not yet.
The ICC Cricket World Cup 2027 start date is currently being reported as a proposed plan rather than a formally confirmed date. Until the ICC makes an official announcement, October 2 should be described as the likely or proposed opening date, not a confirmed schedule.
If the plan goes ahead, however, the 2027 World Cup could begin with a highly symbolic opening on Gandhi Jayanti, adding a unique historical connection to cricket’s return to Africa.
